Backlash against All-American Muslims give Christians a bad name

My wife and I have started watching All-American Muslim on TLC. I wouldn't say that I'm a die-hard fan of the show, but I do watch it with great interest. What I really love about the show is that it shows Muslims living normal lives. Not that I'm shocked that Muslims live normal lives. But I love that TLC is willing to air a show that flies in the face of all the stupid stereotypes.

True, I'll never see eye-to-eye with the Islamic faith, but that doesn't mean that I can't admire their strong commitment to faith and family.

What annoys me to no end is when advertisers show a lack of guts/class and yank advertising, specifically when the group pressuring them to yank the advertising is an ignorant bunch of tools.

First, Lowes pulled it's advertising, and now Kayak.com is doing the same thing. I won't be giving either entity my business any time soon

Lowes did it because of a fundamentalist group called Florida Family Association, who said of the show,

"TLC's 'All-American Muslim' is propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."

Traditional American liberties and values, such as freedom of religion? Apparently these tools from Florida forgot about that one.

Lowes is free to advertise or not advertise. That's one of those other American liberties that Florida Family Association loves so much. But to pull your advertising due to threats from ignorant people? That's ridiculous.

What is even more ridiculous about groups like the one in Florida is that they take the actions of a small minority, and try to say that the entire group of people share those beliefs. In this instance, because of terrorism, they have it in their brain that all Muslims are filled with hate.

OK, so if that is true, if the actions of a minority define everyone else, then aren't all Christians hateful people? Look at the Westboro Baptist Church: all they do is preach about God hating everyone. If I'm supposed to believe that Muslims are filled with hate because of a few terrorists, then shouldn't I believe that all Christians are fill with hate because of a few small churches?

This is why I could never support Herman Cain's presidential run: Because he decided early on that he wasn't going to have any Muslims in his cabinet because they weren't "American enough." Sorry Herman, but when you and groups like FFA stereotype races, you aren't very "American" yourself.

It's stories like these that make me ashamed to call myself Christian, even though I know the power of Christ is stronger than the ignorance of others. Still, fundamentalist Christians are probably the one group who annoys me the most: their fervant disdain of anything that differs from their interpretation of the Bible makes every other sincere Christian look bad.

I just hope that Muslims see us the way the most of us see them: A good lot of people with a few bad apples.
